Luminary
A downloadable game for Windows
Created for the thatgamecompany x COREBLAZER GAME JAM 2025.
In brainstorming about generosity, our team concluded that generous acts have two qualities. The first is that a generous act is relational; someone gives and another receives. We decided some cooperative multiplayer element was crucial. However, co-op multiplayer often is a trade off. A barter between players is not necessarily generous since it is mutually beneficial. True generosity does not expect an immediate return. Generosity has a selfless quality. Acts like donating money to charitable causes, raising children, teaching, mentoring, and building a better society for future generations are generous. There is an asynchronous element to these acts. We may never experience the benefits but we give anyway. Generosity is relational and selfless.
'Luminary' is simply a maze where the player must get to the end. However, it is dark except for a few points of light throughout the maze. The player is able to pick up these lights and drop them elsewhere. Wherever the lights are left when the player's light fades is stored in the cloud. On future playthroughs, a random player's lights are populated in the maze. Can asynchronous players guide one another through the maze? Where will you leave your light to help future generations?
This game is a an experiment in rogue-like, asynchronous co-operative play. Can players across time guide one another through the maze?
